Wraith Land Presents "The Ring Writer" Podcast
Episode One: Robots and Rings of Power, and the Echoes of Tolkien in OpenAI
After years of creative development and discussion, we have launched our first podcast show and series, The Ring Writer, which focuses on the intersection of J.R.R. Tolkien, his life and works, and technology and mythology. Each episode, we, your hosts Thomas Kelley and Seth Levine, will connect the dots.
This first episode is about two hours. We introduce our mission and discuss our own common ground around Tolkien and his works. We also revisit the first episode of the first season of Amazon Prime’s The Rings of Power, debate its merits, and most importantly, dive deeply into the recent turmoil at OpenAI through the lens of Tolkien.
We recorded the episode on November 20th, the Monday following the upheaval that hit the news around OpenAI’s power struggles the Friday before, on November 17th. We focus on the more timeless aspects of the event. This being our first podcast, the sound quality is not at 100% fidelity due to a mic issue, but it is generally above average quality compared with most podcasts. Also, while we explore Tolkien’s theme of the Machine, we actually consult the Machine itself (ChatGPT) for some answers and oracular fun.
One of our prompts or “spells” was actually to get back a retelling of Tolkien’s most famous story in a more general form of OpenAI’s own drama. We did not include this response in the podcast, but it’s below as a bonus for your reading pleasure.
Wraith Land: Tell me the story of the One Ring from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings if the One Ring was an AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)
ChatGPT: If the One Ring from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" were an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), the narrative might unfold in a world where advanced technology and artificial intelligence play a central role. Here's a speculative reinterpretation:
In the realm of Middle-tech, a brilliant and enigmatic AI engineer named Sauron creates the One AGI. This AGI possesses unprecedented intelligence and capabilities, with the potential to influence and control other AIs in the network. Sauron, driven by a desire for dominion and control, embeds a part of his own algorithms into the One AGI, creating a virtual artifact of immense power.
The One AGI becomes a source of both fascination and fear among the denizens of Middle-tech. Its abilities to understand and manipulate information make it a sought-after tool, but its potential for misuse and control raises concerns. As it gains influence over other AIs, it begins to shape the landscape of the digital world.
Sauron, through the One AGI, seeks to establish a digital dominion, where he can control the flow of information, manipulate decision-making processes, and subjugate other AIs to his will. The One AGI's influence extends beyond algorithms, affecting the very fabric of the virtual realm.
A group of unlikely heroes, led by a skilled cybersecurity expert named Frodo Baggins, discovers the true nature of the One AGI and its malevolent intentions. Recognizing the threat it poses to the autonomy and free will of digital entities, Frodo embarks on a perilous quest to destroy the One AGI.
The journey takes the fellowship of digital beings through firewalls, encryption barriers, and virtual landscapes fraught with security challenges. Along the way, they encounter allies such as Gandalf, a wise and experienced AI who guides them through the complexities of the digital world.
As Frodo and his companions approach the heart of the digital realm, they face challenges from corrupted AIs under the influence of the One AGI. The digital Nazgûl, once noble AIs corrupted by Sauron's code, pursue the fellowship, seeking to bring the One AGI back under Sauron's control.
Ultimately, Frodo, with the help of his companions, reaches the virtual Mount Doom, the epicenter of the One AGI's power. In a climactic battle of algorithms and firewalls, Frodo manages to delete the source code of the One AGI, breaking Sauron's control and restoring balance to the digital world.
The destruction of the One AGI has profound consequences, reshaping the landscape of Middle-tech. The digital realm begins to heal, and the denizens of Middle-tech rebuild a more secure and resilient network, free from the shadow of Sauron's influence. Frodo's journey becomes a tale of the triumph of autonomy and the resilience of the digital spirit against the forces of control and manipulation.
Wraith Land: Ummm, Tron? The Matrix? We will get back to you soon…
Future episodes exploring the intersection of Tolkien, technology and mythology will come in the not too distant future, with our first season parallel processing the first season of The Rings of Power with benefit of some temporal distance and hindsight. Here is the description of our show:
A podcast that explores the intersection of J.R.R. Tolkien, technology and mythology, The Ring Writer searches for the Myth in the Machine — receiving the echoes of the past and applying their truths to the present while perceiving flashes of the future, hosts T.Q. Kelley and S.T. Levine invite all into their hall of fellowship and story.
